We were supposed to go for a picnic, instead the Soviet tanks came

Available in: English | Česky

Kristina Černá will never forget the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia. Her parents promised her a picnic with a barbecue. Instead, they had to explain to her why she had to wait in a line for potatoes. “People just panicked and started to buy everything up,” she recalled. Meanwhile, Soviet tanks and armored vehicles started rolling out into the forest where the picnic was supposed to have taken place: “Up there in the woods, at the end of the Pekná cesta Road, there was a military garrison and a munitions store. Since the morning, the tanks were rolling there. So that’s what the occupation looked like.”

Kristina Černá

Kristina Černá, née Lukášová, is a successful psychologist with a long and colorful career, as well as a poet and a translator. She was born on July 14, 1959, in Kroměříž, but spent half of her life in Bratislava, where she witnessed the various reversals and milestones of Czech history. She experienced the typical manifestations and the atmosphere of each of the epochs first hand. The period after the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet troops, which was characterized by stern reprisals against political opponents by the regime of the Communist Party, the Velvet revolution and the post-revolutionary euphoria, the disappointment of the new political system, the large-scale theft of former state assets, colloquially called “tunneling,” connected to the era of privatization of the early 1990s. Her life was significantly affected by the division of Czechoslovakia in 1992, when she had to quickly move out of Bratislava to Prague with her husband and little son.

A garrison store and ammunition store were located in the forests surrounding the housing estate, Krásňany. On 21 August 1968 the whole unit was mobilized, and the contemporaries recall tanks drawing out of the base throughout the day.
