The Preps for Running Away

Available in: English | Česky

In 1949, Julie Hrušková who just turned twenty met a co-worker who urgently needed to be guarded across the border. Because she also hated the communists and her father was a game warden in the borderlands, they firmed the plans soon and decided to escape together with two other young guys. March 13, 1949, that was the day. “We met at my parents´ house in Vranov. After lunch my parents and brother went for a walk to the dam. The soldiers were breaking the ice with grenades there. I said goodbye to them and told them I go to the castle and then to Brno with the boys. From the castle we saw my parents. When they were far enough, I gave a command ‛Hurry!’ At home I packed everything very quickly, said to the neighbour to pass to my parents I went to Brno and we headed to the border line.”

Julie Hrušková

Julie Hrušková

Julie Hrušková was born on the 18th of May 1928 in Boskovštejn, Znojmo district. Her father was a game keeper in the Czech-Austrian border region, so he knew the forests and the land around the borders well. After February 1948, a friend asked her to guide him and one other over the borders. She left with them, and passing through Vienna, reached a refugee camp in Linz, where people were being recruited for illegal activity against the totalitarian regime in Czechoslovakia. Julie signed herself up. She was supposed to guide refugees over the borders. However, she was detained in the Soviet zone in Linz and taken to České Budějovice. She was interrogated in Brno, as a result of torture and beating, she aborted (she had been engaged to an American soldier in Austria, who she never saw again). She was convicted of espionage and sentenced to fifteen years of prison, eight years of which she spent in Pardubice. She was not released until the great presidential amnesty in 1960. After that she worked as a seamstress. On the 28th of October 2010, she was awarded the Order of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, 2nd Class.

After the Second World War, gamekeeper Karel Hruška moved to the gamekeeper’s lodge in Vranov nad Dyjí. He was assigned a forest district adjacent to the Austrian border. During his rounds, he befriended Austrian financial guards. Later, he decided to use his knowledge of the terrain, as well as his contacts on the other side of the border, and to help people who wanted to flee from Czechoslovakia after the events of 1948. The first person to whom he helped crossed the border in August 1948. Few months later, his daughter Julie and some of her friends also decided to flee. This caused the Hruška family to be under strict police control and further border crossings were prevented. In the fifties, the Hruška family was forced to move out of the border area.
