Air Raids on Kiel Dockyards

Available in: English | Česky

In 1942, shortly after passing his final exam at one of the Prague grammar schools, René Šírek was sent to forced labor at the German port city Kiel, where he worked for anti-aircraft defense and clearance services. In the spring of 1943, the Allies launched bombing raids on Kiel, especially on dockyards in the eastern neighborhood of Garden. Šírek recalled: “One of the giant dockyards was called Krupp-Werke; the other one was called Germaniawerft. In both of them submarines were assembled. The Allies managed to hit them, particularly the Germaniawerft dockyard. The bombing took place at high noon, so when we arrived there, we could see that most of the submarines were smashed to pieces and there were still pots full of eintopf in the canteens, since the workers had no time to eat. There were more air raids on Kiel like this.”

René Šírek

René Šírek was born in 1923 in Prague. In June 1942, he passed his final exam at Jirásek Grammar School in Prague. Few months later he was called by the Prague municipality and enlisted as a forced laborer in Germany. Since he wanted to continue his studies and avoid the forced labor at the same time, he enrolled in the language school in Hradební Street in Prague, as well as in a business school, where he signed up for a two-year graduate course. Despite the fact that he started to attend both of these schools in September 1942, he was nonetheless sent to Germany. Together with a large number of other Czechs he boarded a train to Hamburg in early October 1942. Upon their arrival, the forced laborers were given firemen uniforms and transported to the port city of Kiel, where they underwent training. They fell under the category of Zwangsarbeiter. René Šírek was trained by the Luftschutz (anti-aircraft defence), and by the Entgiftung (clearance services). His duties included fighting fires and clearing rubble, as well as searching for, arming, and defusing unexploded incendiary bombs. He remembers fighting the fires in the Hamburg main train station and the hospital.

The seaport of Kiel, which is located in northern Germany at the mouth of the Kiel Canal, (Nord-Ostsee-Kanal in German), into the Baltic Sea, is the capital of the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein. During WWII, the majority of the city was destroyed by Allied bombing, which focused mainly on the naval port.
