Warm-up exercises with Baťa

Available in: English | Česky

Jaroslav Kozlík, an ardent educator, was a physical training teacher at the experimental Masaryk differentiated school in Zlín in the years 1933-1945. The differentiated school was a progressive school with modern teaching methods. Jaroslav Kozlík promoted physical training courses in the outdoors and nature – inspired by his encounter with Czech scouting. He also initiated a competition for a fitness badge, nature language courses, skiing courses, and trips for teachers, parents, and their children. In the morning he would personally coach the owner of the Baťa Company, Jan Antonín Baťa, and the sons of the executive director of the Baťa Company, Dominik Čipera. Kozlík recalls: “At first, I was a little afraid of Baťa. I was afraid if we would get along together well. But once we put our gloves on and began to box and jump the rope, I shook off all the nervousness. Baťa loved to sing and I remember that after we were done with running, he would sing in the garden to the astonishment of the workers who went to work and who wondered why Baťa was fooling around.” The warm-up exercise for Baťa took place every morning from 6:00 to 6:20. Thereafter, Jaroslav continued with warming-up exercises for the children of Dominik Čipera, the director of Baťa. The era of progressive education in the differentiated school was over when its patron, Jan Baťa, emigrated abroad.

Jaroslav Kozlík

Jaroslav Kozlík

Dr. Jaroslav Kozlík was born on May 24, 1907, in Bystřice pod Hostýnem in a merchant’s family. His father soon joined the troops on the battlefields of World War I and the son took over the family business. In 1920, Jaroslav Kozlík joined the local Sokol, (Czech equivalent of the Scout – note by the translator), organization and began to practice physical exercises regularly. He became a living legend of Czech Volleyball. He attended the first national championship in 1924 and won three times with his team. He became a tireless promoter of sport. He graduated from the Teaching Institute in Kroměříž and became a teacher. In 1930, he started working as a teacher in the Baťa School in Zlín, where he actively participated in the development of the concept of the Baťa schools and their sports facilities. He introduced a new concept of physical exercises, sports, and language trips into the countryside. He became the personal trainer of Jan Antonín Baťa, who entrusted him with the devising of a new type of school. From 1945 until 1972, he worked at the Research Institute of Education in Prague, which he finally had to leave because of his opposition to the invasion of the Soviet troops on Czechoslovak territory. He became involved in the development of school reforms in the 1990s, despite his visual impairment. Mr. Jaroslav Kozlík died on October 21, 2012.

The villa of J. A. Baťa, (1898 - 1965), the stepbrother of T. Baťa, was built by the local construction company Zlámal & Plaček around the year 1927. The author of the original design is most likely F. L. Gahur. The villa was confiscated after WWII and was overshadowed by the construction of the collective house in the 1950s.
