They Drove Them past Our House
Anna Štichauerová lived with her parents in the guesthouse called ‘The Guesthouse by the Green Tree’ in Pardubice. “On June 24, 1942, a convoy of lorries covered with tilts arrived from the Ležáky direction. Two Gestapo members, who often came to visit our landlord, were just there. We all had to go out and have a look at those cars. You could hear women and children crying inside the lorries. I recall one woman who lived across the street. When she heard the moaning, she returned inside and when she came back, she carried a small tray with some bread, milk and sausage on it and wanted to give it to the people in the lorries. At that instant a Gestapo officer got out of the car, started to threaten her with his gun stock and knocked the tray out of her hands, so she could not give anything to the women and children. Her husband ran out of the house because he was afraid that they might take his wife as well. It was shocking, but no one understood what was going on. Suddenly a man on a horse came from the direction of Chrudim screaming: ‘Ležáky is on fire!’ Only then did we realize what had probably happened to the village!” she recalled.
