The U.S. mission to Velichovky
In the very last days of the war, a convoy of the U.S. Army unexpectedly passed through the Všestary village, situated in eastern Bohemia, far beyond the demarcation line agreed between the allied forces. In the afternoon of May 7, 1945, a delegation of the U.S. Army set out from Plzeň. Its goal was the spa of Velichovky in Jaroměř, the seat of the headquarters of the German Army Group “Mitte”. Its commander was Field Marshal Ferdinand Schörner. His army counted about 900,000 men and had a huge arsenal of arms and combat gear at its disposal. It was one of the last operational segments of the German army. On May 8, 1945, the U.S. Army delegation delivered the wording of the German surrender to Marshal Schörner. His troops then left the village of Velichovky, as well as the U.S. convoy, which returned behind the demarcation line. Oldřich Kalousek, who was 12 years old by the end of the war, witnessed these events. He recalls the column of the U.S. troops passing through the Všestary village: “American armored cars with machine guns swept through the village carrying on towards Velichovky.” Interestingly, the delegation of the U.S. Army to Velichovky allegedly took place without the Red Army knowing about it.
