The Pan-European Picnic was a peace demonstration at the Austrian-Hungarian border near Sopron on 19 August 1989. This is an important antecedent was cutting through the iron curtain, Germany unification. This picnic was a big protest against the Socialist government, which was called the Pan-European Picnic. While this was happening more than 700 people who lived in East Germany (which was Socialist) escaped to the West. On this day Commander Árpád Bella and five soldier lads were called out to the border. The exodus had been going on for three hours, they kept on going […] Only five more metres and it was already Austrian terrain. Some of the East Germans were getting hysterical. And at that very moment Árpi asked in German, 'where would you like to go?'. They said, 'to Austria'. They were glaring at each other.The soldier lads asked 'commander, what shall we do now?' As, Árpád Bella apparently told them beforehand that they weren't supposed to shoot unless they are commanded to. They were to give only a warning shot as they were commanded to prevent illegal border crossing. But Árpi was aware of the five thousand Austrians at the back and the hundred and fifty East Germans with that glare in their eyes. Even a casual pat on a rifle bag would have scared the East Germans. Panic would have overcome them and they would've lynched the soldiers. Or, if, God forbid, the shot ends up in Austria! That would've resulted in a massive international scandal! […] And the Germans kept on coming. They were already in the maise field. Facing Hungary, there is a maise field on the left. They were coming out of that realising that there was a way to. And then the soldiers asked, 'What shall we do now, commander?' Then he said,'Count them and give me a rough number!' Finally, he figured out that the soldiers should stand facing Austria. You are only liable for what you see. This is the nice, old byzantine way. And the Austrians were coming anyway, and passports had to get stamped and forms had to be filled in. And all that engaged their attention. And the Germans left behind their backs.

László Nagy

László Nagy was born to conservative, religious parents in 1957. His father was a forest engineer, while his mother took care of their three children. The family moved to Sopron in 1960. They lived in Nigeria between 1970 and 1977. László did his secondary school leaving exam in Germany and then continued his studies at the Technical University of Budapest. He is a founder of the 405 circle, which invited politicians and public figures (several representatives of the opposition among them) to the university. He got his degree in chemical engineering in 1982. Subsequently, he and his family moved back to Sopron. They had three children. László worked in the Sopron Carpet Factory and earned a degree in textile engineering. At the end of the 1980s he joined the local opposition group in Sopron and became one of the organisers of the Pan-European Picnic (19 August, 1989). Up until 1996 he had been politically active and a member of the Hungarian Democratic Forum's executive committee. Since 1990 onwards he has been the Hungarian representative of various foreign companies and the managing director of the Viva la Musica Art Agency. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic in 1999. He is a curator of Pan-European Picnic '89 Foundation.

Sopron – "A leghűségesebb város" A mintegy hatvanezer lakosú város Magyarország nyugati határa mellett, Bécstől 60 km-re az Ikva-patak völgyében található. A terület az őskor óta lakott. A római korban egy Scarbantia nevű város állt itt. A 11. század elejére kialakult Sopron vára. A rohamosan fejlődő település ma is fennálló szerkezete a 13. századra nagyrészt kialakult. A 15-16. században országos jelentőségre szert tett város fejlődése a 18. századtól lelassult, s a19. században már csak kisváros volt. 1921-ben, a trianoni békeszerződés után népszavazás döntötte el, hogy Sopron és a környező nyolc község (Ágfalva, Balf, Fertőboz, Fertőrákos, Harka, Kópháza, Nagycenk és Sopronbánfalva) melyik országhoz (Ausztriához vagy Magyarországhoz) tartozzon. A soproniak többsége Magyarország mellett döntött. Ezért hívják „A leghűségesebb város”-nak (Civitas fidelissima). A hivatalok kétnyelvűek maradtak egészen az 1946-ig, a német anyanyelvűek kitelepítéséig. A város sokat szenvedett a II. világháborúban. A város zsidó lakosságát (1857 főt) 1944 nyarán szinte teljes egészében haláltáborokba szállították, az elhurcoltak közül 325-en tértek vissza. A Sopron környéki tömegsírokba 2181 éhezésben, járványokban elhunyt és agyonlőtt munkaszolgálatos holttestét temették el. A nyilasok 1944 decemberétől 1945. március 28-ig lényegében Sopronból irányították az országot. Bár a II. világháború után Sopronban is jelentős ipari fejlődés bontakozott ki, de ez a folyamat a bánya bezárását követően (1951) leállt. Az évek során inkább kulturális szerepe vált jelentőssé. A város bájos barokk arculatát sikerült megőrizni. A Kádár-rendszerben a városban igen jelentős műemlékvédelmi munkálatok folytak, a látványos eredmények miatt a város méltán kapta meg 1975-ben a Műemlékvédelmi Európa Díj aranyérmét. A szocializmus ideje alatt a város az ún. határsávban volt, csak külön engedéllyel lehetett megközelíteni. Határában húzódott a vasfüggöny, rendszeresek voltak a vonatokon, közutakon a belügyi zaklatások. 1989. augusztus 19-én az úgynevezett páneurópai piknik alkalmával megnyitották a határt, ezt az alkalmat több száz NDK-beli lakos az Ausztriába menekülésre használta fel. Miután megszüntették a határsávot, Sopron újra virágzásnak indult, s ma Nyugat-Magyarország leglátogatottabb idegenforgalmi központja. Egyetemváros, az erdőmérnöki kar ma a Nyugat-magyarországi Egyetem része. A környék mikroklímája kedvez a bortermelésnek. Sopron a „kékfrankos fővárosa”.
