The Americans were inquisitive
In the evening after his escape, Andreas Schumann was given fresh clothes and handed over to the U.S. occupation authority in Hof. Fortunately, he spokes a little English and was thus able to make himself understood by the Americans. They took care of him and treated him casually: “We’d sit together and it was there that I ate celery with peanut butter for the first time in my life. We watched football together and it was all very nice and comfortable until I said: ‘you know, I’m a little tired now, it’s been a really long day for me and I’d really like to go to bed now’. Then I was taken to a proper cell in the basement of the house, with proper bars, and that was my sleeping quarters for the night. So you could basically say that I spent the first night in freedom behind bars,” Schumann recalled. He didn't see his family until one year later in 1989. Source: private archive of A. Schumann.
