A train station as the starting point for an exciting escape story

Available in: English | Deutsch

In April 1972, the railway station in Marienbad became the starting point for an adventurous escape story. Hans Heine, a citizen of West Germany fell in love with a woman from East Berlin during a one-day stay in that city. He subsequently devised an escape plan for the two of them to West Germany: “We met in Prague where we stayed for a few days for holiday. Right in the beginning of our stay there, I told her: ‘girl, I’ve got a plan for us to escape and my question is: are you ready to come with me? If not, I’d have to declare that I see no chance of finding to each other in the foreseeable future and then it may be better to end the relationship’. But she consented immediately, without any hesitation. She said: ‘yes, I’m coming with you’.” The couple traveled by train to Marienbad, as this was the town nearest to the border, and set out on their escape path with carrying only the necessities in their baggage. After some dangerous and daring situations in the forest, the young couple made it to safety and set its foot on West German territory in the area between Mähring and Neualbenreuth.

Hans Heine

Hans Heine

Hans Heine fell in love with a girl in East Berlin during a one-day stay in 1969. The couple maintained the relationship for about two years, despite the fact that the Berlin Wall was keeping them apart in space and the GDR authorities were trying to do everything in their power to tear them apart. After Hans Heine had been banned from entering the GDR, he explored large parts of the “Iron Curtain” on foot assisting fugitives, in order to find a suitable spot for an escape. He finally makes the decision to try to escape across the border in the Bohemian segment of the Curtain. At a meeting with his girlfriend in Prague, he confronted her with the escape plan and the pair managed to escape from Mariánské lázně, (Marienbad), to the FRG.

Marienbad, railway station

Marienbad, (Marianské Lázně), is a Bohemian town in the border area of Germany and Bohemia. Since the 19th century, it has been known primarily for its unique mineral springs. Since then, it has served as a spa and a tourist attraction from near and far. The railway station in Marienbad was opened in 1872 by the newly created Austrian company “Emperor Franz Joseph Railway Company.” The railway led from Plzeň via Marienbad to Eger, (Cheb). The town remained occupied by German troops until the end of World War II. Afterwards, the German residents were expropriated and expelled. The town was seized by the Czechs again. During World War II, the inflow of tourists waned considerably. In April 1945, the train station became the scene of horror when 1,000 Jewish prisoners from a sub-camp of the Buchenwald concentration camp were massacred here.
