We’d even use the toilet for communication
In 1949, Miloslav Bulva stood in court in a trumped-up trial with the group “Stříteský and associates.” He spent the preceding month in prison in Chrudim. Although he had already had some experience with detention in Pardubice, the local conditions in Chrudim were very hard for the seventeen-year-old youngster. Humiliations were common place in the prison. The inmates were ordered to stand for long hours lined up naked. They were kept constantly hungry and there was one open toilet for six people. On the other hand, the flush toilet served well for communication between the individual cells. After soaking up the water from the toilet bowl and the drain pipe, the inmates could speak to their counterparts from the cell on the floor below and above them. Miloslav Bulva recalls: “It had been agreed upon that at a certain time they’d be ready to have a chat with us. The prison warders knew about it, maybe they were also listening to our conversations at some toilet.”
