Escape by a ladder

By the help of a ladder three young men, inhabitants of Szombathely, escaped to Austria in 1977. They live in Great Britain. "They were in this museum some years ago and told the story of their risky run away. They were afraid to take a hammer and nails to the forest, because it wouldn’t have been wise to hammer there, but hey succeeded in tucking a jack knife in their pocket. Their plan was to cut poles in the forest and bind them with a cord. Fortune smiled upon them and they found enough in a baling machine on the skirts of the forest. Luckily the machine had been left there by the workers of the local farmers’ agricultural co-operative. They were keeping their eyes on the patrol. They knew they had 8-10 minutes for the escape after his passing by. The first and the second vault went quite smoothly, because the next one could help by steadying the ladder. When the third of them wanted to vault they were in trouble. Nobody could hold the ladder and it fell down. The man told me he had a narrow escape, all but millimeters, from falling on the alarming device. Fortunately one of them had a saving idea. He quickly cut a longer pole, they carefully passed it through the defence wiring and they firmly reposed the ladder against it to support it. The young man bound that pole to the ladder with a string. He climbed the ladder and jumped. All of them luckily escaped to Austria before the patrol came back," recalled Goják Sándor.

Goják Sándor, escape in the sixties

Sándor Goják was born in Borjád village, (Baranya county), on 25th February 1947. His father was a mine worker and his mother was a housewife. The family had four children. After finishing primary school, he moved to Budapest. He played in Dózsa Football Team of Újpest as a kid soccer team player, later he was a member of the Youth Team. He was trained at an engine fitter’s vocational school. He completed it in 1964. He was drafted into the army as a frontier guard on 22nd February 1965. The military training was in Nyírbátor then he went to military officer’s school. He served as a platoon sergeant in Pornóapáti. He was discharged on 15th February 1968. He got married in 1971 and had two daughters. He worked for MÁV Vehicle Repair in Szombathely from 1971. He was a group leader there. He continued his studies and graduated from engineering tertiary school. He built a villa on Vashegy in the neighbourhood of Felsőcsatár in 1981. He ran a wine bar there from 1990. From that time on he began to collect artefacts and stories of the 41 years during the Iron Curtain period to build the museum. Iron Curtain Museum of Felsőcsatár officially opened in 2001.

Pornóapáti

Pornóapáti Szombathelytől 16 km-re, délnyugatra, az osztrák határ mellett, a Pornóapáti-patak és a Pinka összefolyásánál, a Vas-hegy lábánál fekszik. A falu 386 lakosának többsége német nemzetiség. A község területén már a római korban villák lehettek. A települést 1221-ben Porno néven említik először. Ciszterci apátságát 1221-ben alapították. A falut a trianoni békeszerződés értelmében 1921-ben Ausztriához csatolták, de 1923-ban népszavazással visszakerült Magyarország birtokába. Az 1922-ben határátkelőhely 1949-ben bezárásra került, és a Vasfüggöny lebontásáig kiemelten őrzött terület volt, megközelíteni csak külön engedéllyel lehetett. 2005-ben itt valósult meg először osztrák példák alapján a Nyugat-Dunántúl első bio-falufűtőműve.
