They were fleeing naked

Dostupné v: English | Česky | Slovensky

Ján Bugel deserted his unit during the dying phase of the Slovak National Uprising near Banské Štiavnice. With a few friends he was headed east toward his home. With the help of some locals, they swapped their uniforms for civilian clothes and got rid of their weapons. After having walked for dozens of kilometers, somewhere past Poprad, the tired men lay down for a rest on a meadow near the forest during daytime. They were literally stumbled across by a 10-men-strong German patrol. All of them were arrested and taken to barracks in Sabinov, 80 kilometers away, used as a temporary detention camp for the insurgents. Ján Bugel was placed in the attic, where he met an interesting man – a Yugoslav who had a considerable amount of money and a plan of escape. One night the two men carried out that plan. They stripped their clothes completely in order to prevent the buckles on the clothes from tinkling. They let down their clothing first and then climbed down the pole in front of the window – all naked. The Yugoslav had studied the times of changing of the German guards and the routes they’d usually take. Thus they managed to escape undetected across the fence.

Ján Bugel

Ján Bugel was born on August 23, 1923, in Slovakia in Kalniště. In 1943, he was drafted to military service in the Slovak army. In Zvolen, he served as a liaison officer of his unit and as the “batman” of the commander of the first division, later of the German military supervisor. During the Slovak National Uprising in the summer of 1944, he worked briefly at the airport Tri Duby and in the barracks in Zvolen at a warehouse from which supplied civilians with gear and arms. He participated in the Battle of Strečno, for example. At the end of the war he joined the Czechoslovak army advancing under the command of Colonel Svoboda. After an injury in Liptovský Mikuláš, he served with the field police, which was supposed to “clear” the trenches in the rear and detain the fleeing Germans. He was the commander of one of the detention camps for the Germans established in Jihlava. After the war, he worked in the Prague tatrovka factory as a worker. He also joined the Social Democratic Party. In the 1960s, he became a professional soldier and served at the Pardubice airport as the commander of the mobilization store. He died in 2011.
