Mr. President, these people are innocent!
In October 1981, Rudolf Smahel and four of his friends were to stand trial in front of the county court in Olomouc. It was a concoct trial in which they were charged with illegal entrepreneurship for publishing samizdat literature. However, information about the trial leaked to the West and Rudolf Smahel recalls that that year their trail became one of the most closely watched trials in Western Europe. “Even some French journalists appeared in Olomouc. Of course, they were not allowed to enter the courtroom, but they were at least able to get the picture. One could say that our trial was shouted from the roof tops. We heard that Gustav Husák, (the then President – transl. note), was flooded with postcards and letters coming from abroad. In Germany, they even made a special postcard – there was a picture of the five of us and I think that it said: ‘Olomouc 1981’ and on the other side, there was a German text: ‘Mr. President, these people that are in jail are innocent. We support them; do everything in your power to release them.’” Despite of that, or maybe because of that, all five of them were sentenced to imprisonment. Rudolf Smahel was given a two-year sentence.
