In 1954 Josef Čoček, an agent-walker, was arrested while crossing the border. In Autumn that year he was transferred to a prison in Olomouc and right after he came there, the investigators knocked out his eight teeth during the interrogation. The constant beating and humiliation caused that though Josef Čoček was twenty-two years he was close to the edge: “Mostly they beat me and when I was about to have a hearing at a court after a half of a year, they had to take me to the hospital to Brno, to put me physically together so I could even go there.”

Olomouc, remand prison

Available in: English | Česky

The Neo-Renaissance building of the Palace of Justice in Olomouc, which houses a remand prison, was finished in 1902. During the Second World War hundreds of members and supporters of the resistance movement were imprisoned here. From 1948 to 1990 the prison held hundreds of arrested persons again, only this time they were political prisoners. The prison has remained functional to this day.
