Sonja Hefelewas born on February 5, 1949, in Carlsbad. Fearful of persecutions by the former Soviet Union – her father had served in the Wehrmacht – the family (including Sonja Hefele, who was a baby at that time) successfully fled to Austria with the help of an accomplice in 1949. However, because they feared for the fate of the parents of Sonja’s mother, they eventually returned to Czechoslovakia again. Although Sonja Hefele was born in Czechoslovakia, she obtained German citizenship: “Well, the odd thing about me is that I was born in Carlsbad, of German nationality because both my parents were Germans and (Czech) citizenship with option at the age of 13.”

Carlsbad

Available in: English | Deutsch

Carlsbad, in Czech Karlovy Vary, is a city in western Bohemia with a population of 51.115 (2011). In 1945, the German population of Carlsbad was largely expropriated and exiled on the basis of the Potsdam agreement and the later Beneš decrees. After the war, there was a process of state-promoted resettlement of the region, predominantly by a population originating in central Bohemia but also in Moravia and Slovakia. Furthermore, this stream of new inhabitants of Carlsbad was complemented by repatriates and members of the Roma ethnic minority. The spa facilities were nationalized in 1946. After the Communist regime collapsed in 1989, the Carlsbad spa resorts have re-focused on the international clientele again.
