Gypsies came!
Gypsies would come to Lidice every once in a while. They would park their two or three caravans on a meadow by the rock at the outskirts of the village, close to the house of the Doležal family. This was a sign for all of the women in the village that they had to lock up their poultry in the henhouses. Milada Cábová recalls smilingly: “You know, some chickens always got lost; that is just the way it was. The Gypsies would stay for a few days and then they would leave again. Some of them even knew few Czech words, so we could talk with them.” The local children used to play with the Gypsy children. Despite the fact that the Gypsy children spoke Romany, they were somehow able to make themselves understood. Milada Cábová continues: “Our communication was more like gibberish, but you know, we had a good time. Sometimes there were fights, but that is normal among children. Back then there was no racism like nowadays.” In the past Gypsies lived a nomadic life and people were used to their presence. They usually made their living by sharpening knives and scissors; women sold ribbons and buttons. During the Second World War, the Czech Gypsies suffered the same fate as the Jewish people and they became victims of the holocaust.
