An Orphan from Lidice
On June 9, 1942, Blažena Pitínová came with her six weeks old baby boy Jiří in a pram to the house number eight in Na Hutích street in Prague, because of a medical exam. After the exam she visited her older sister Marie who lived in the same house. The sister tried to convince Blažena to stay overnight, but she refused because of her husband, and later that day, she returned with her son to Lidice… Four years later, the small boy Jiří returned to the very same house again. In the meantime, his mother had died in the Ravensbrück concentration camp, his father had been executed at the firing range in Kobylisy, his elder sister had been gassed in Chelmno. He had spent the war in the children’s home in Krč. The only close relative he still had was his aunt Marie, who then took care of him and helped him to grow to manhood.
