Pavel Macháček se dostal do Flossenbürgu na podzim roku 1944. Nějakou dobu bydlel v bloku hned nad krematoriem a záhy se dozvěděl, jak probíhá spalování mrtvých těl. „V krematoriu byly jen malé pece pro dvě těla. Většina mrtvol se pálila na hromadě.“ Vězni, kteří měli spalování na starosti, dávali k sobě vždy jednoho tlustého a jednoho hubeného vězně, protože ten tlustší hořel lépe. „Nasládlý zápach ze spalování byl strašný. Cítím ho doteď.“

Pavel Macháček

Narodil se 15. 8. 1921 v Praze. Za války ukrýval Jiřího Synka (básník František Listopad). Prošel Malou pevností v Terezíně, Flossenbürgem i pochodem smrti. Po válce vstoupil do KSČ a do armády, v roce 1970 byl vyhozen pro „politickou nespolehlivost“. Krátce pracoval jako skladník, poté jako bezpečnostní a požární technik u Poštovní a novinové služby. Zemřel roku 2008.

Flossenbürg

Flossenbürg was conceived by the Nazis as a camp for “antisocial” (meaning mostly political opponents) and “criminal” elements. The camp was intentionally located close to granite quarries so that the prisoners could be used as a free workforce. Flossenbürg belonged to the so called second generation of the Nazi concentration camps, and it was one of the first camps where under the motto „Vernichtung durch Arbeit“ (of a new form of terror Extermination through labour) a new form of terror was applied. The prisoners had to do hard work without getting adequate food or health care; and any cruel misdemeanour was cruelly punished. A total number of 100,000 prisoners passed through the camp. About 30,000 died there.
