The Czechoslovak Soviet Socialist Republic

On 21 August, 1968, the troops of the Warsaw Pact arrived at the garrison of the border guard in Domažlice, where they were encountered by two military tanks. The locals were spitting on the occupiers from their windows in protest. However, as they started considering their future, the atmosphere began to change. The presence of the Soviet troops became an everyday reality. However, some resistance remained. An officer of the border guard, Dalibor Plšek, refused to yield to the Soviet occupation. “I got reprimanded after I said that it was time to rename our country the Czechoslovakian Soviet Socialist Republic,” Dalibor Plšek recalled. He committed another offence when he refused to sit in on vetting committees that were supposed to get rid of dissenting colleagues. Therefore, he was expelled from the Communist Party and in October 1973 dismissed from his unit.

He graduated from a NCO school in Lipová near Šluknov and later attended a military school in Bruntál. Thereafter, he served with the 9th brigade of the border guards in Domažlice where he eventually became the quartermaster. He was stationed in several companies, for instance in Lesní Louka, Bystřice and Maxov. After his dismissal from the border guard, he made a living as a driver for the company Zelenina (“Vegetables”), in Plzeň. In 1980, he became a security officer at the District Institute of National Health in Domažlice. In 1990, he joined the border guard once more (at this point called the border-protection authority), serving at its headquarters in Domažliceích as a spokesman as well as the deputy for social and personal affairs. After the border guard was dissolved in 1992, he transferred to the immigration police. Plšek retired in 2000.

Brigades were the largest organizational unit of the border guard. Each one was rather independent of the others and were intended to be entirely self-sufficient. Their main task was to ensure the security of national borders. These brigades were further subdivided into battalions and companies. The 9th brigade of the border guard moved its headquarters from Pobežovice to Domažlice in 1962. In the beginning of the 1960s, a garrison was built there to accommodate its members.
