Warm-up exercises with Baťa
Jaroslav Kozlík, an ardent educator, was a physical training teacher at the experimental Masaryk differentiated school in Zlín in the years 1933-1945. The differentiated school was a progressive school with modern teaching methods. Jaroslav Kozlík promoted physical training courses in the outdoors and nature – inspired by his encounter with Czech scouting. He also initiated a competition for a fitness badge, nature language courses, skiing courses, and trips for teachers, parents, and their children. In the morning he would personally coach the owner of the Baťa Company, Jan Antonín Baťa, and the sons of the executive director of the Baťa Company, Dominik Čipera. Kozlík recalls: “At first, I was a little afraid of Baťa. I was afraid if we would get along together well. But once we put our gloves on and began to box and jump the rope, I shook off all the nervousness. Baťa loved to sing and I remember that after we were done with running, he would sing in the garden to the astonishment of the workers who went to work and who wondered why Baťa was fooling around.” The warm-up exercise for Baťa took place every morning from 6:00 to 6:20. Thereafter, Jaroslav continued with warming-up exercises for the children of Dominik Čipera, the director of Baťa. The era of progressive education in the differentiated school was over when its patron, Jan Baťa, emigrated abroad.
