The snow-white uniforms

Available in: English | Česky

Even after fighting, the American soldiers cared deeply about their neat appearance and took pride in their uniforms, which were always snow-white. Josef Vlach remembers being in Pilsen when the Americans pitched two huge tents on the riverside. One was used as a shower room, and the other as a laundry, which supplied soldiers with clean uniforms and underwear. Another witness, Josef Jehlík, recounts that in the village of Úboč the Americans used to go to his mother and ask her to iron the creases on their shirts. When she complied, they brought her chocolate to show their gratitude.

Josef Vlach

Josef Vlach was born on 20 September 1919 in Pilsen. He studied at the Faculty of Mechanical and Energy Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague. During the mobilisation of September 1938, he engaged in the activities of the National Shooting Union. Armed with a rifle, he patrolled bridges located near Pilsen and guarded them against the Sudeten Germans. As a student he attended the funeral of Jan Opletal, which took place on 15 November 1939. Two days later, on 17 November, he was arrested by the Gestapo in Hlávka Dormitory and transported to Sachsenhausen concentration camp, where he was held prisoner till June 1940. After the war, he finished his university studies and pursued a career in science. Until 1983 he worked at the Energy Research Institute, later at the Research Institute of Fuel and Energy Complex. He also gave lectures at the Czech Technical University.

The Denis Embankment is situated on the regulated river bank of the Radbuza River. Between the years 1986-2012, a so-called “House of Culture” built in socialist-realism style dominated the embankment. After its demolishment, there’s a discussion about how to use the space that’s been freed up by the recent demolition.
