They Just Wrote Me Off

Available in: English | Česky

In 1948, Eva Dušková's fiancé, Miloslac Choc, was executed for purported murder of the StB agent, Major Augustin Schramm. In connection with this case Eva was sentenced to five years for participation in the conspiracy. She served part of her sentence in the Institution for Teenage Girls in Lnáře. According to her memories, the local female wardens were worse than men: “One warden liked to play with the gun. She told me: ‛Imagine if I took out a gun now and shot you here. What would you say? If I wanted to, I could shoot everyone here.’ She was really mad. And then one day she really shot at me, on the way from the post office. At that moment I was bent down to pick up the packages. If I had straightened up a second earlier, I would have been shot in the head or back.” Even when the staff captain stood up for Eva Dušková he did not meet the understanding of his colleagues who tried to protect the shooting warden: “‛This is our comrade whereas Vokálová is the enemy of the state.’ They just wrote me off.”

After the May murder of Augustin Schramm, an important functionary of the partisan movement and Security Major, Choc was the one accused, arrested in Olomouc on the 2nd of June. Shortly before his arrest, the State Security also arrested his girlfriend's family. Choc was sentenced to death and executed on February 11th, 1949. Her mother was not released from prison until 1960, dying soon after from the effects of the long imprisonment and slave-like working conditions.
