We could have met the same fate as Lidice

Available in: English | Česky

On 18 June 1942, the Gestapo came to Dolní Vilémovice to arrest the close relatives of Jan Kubiš, one of the assassins of Reichsprotektor R. Heydrich. Alois Denemarek, a neighbor and friend of Jan Kubiš, remembers: “At the time, we had the paratrooper, František Pospíšil, concealed in our home – and suddenly we had three cars stopping in front of our house. It was the Gestapo – we just stood by the windows while our blood froze to ice. I happened to be shaving Pospíšil that very moment.” By a miracle, the Gestapo did not enter the house, as they were headed to the Kubišes. “The Gestapo had a paper slip, so they knew well where they wanted to go. If they’d have entered our house too, Vilémovice could have met the same fate as Lidice,” Alois Denemarek adds. The German secret police visited the village another thirteen times. They gradually arrested most of Jan Kubiš’s closest relatives. Later, when paratrooper Pospíšil’s hideout was betrayed, they came back for Alois Denemarek’s brother Karel and their parents.

Alois Denemarek

Alois Denemarek was born in Dolní Vilémovice in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands on June 21st, 1917. He grew up together with four siblings in a farming family. He joined the Army in 1937. He got to the dragoons in Pardubice after being in Jihlava and Hradec Králové. His commander was the parachutist-to-be Alfréd Bartoš. His compatriot and friend Jan Kubiš persuaded him to emigrate after the occupation. Later on he kept in touch with Kubiš around the assassination. The Denemarek family hid parachutist Pospíšil in their house. Both the parents and the brother of Alois Denemarek were arrested after the betrayal and they died in concentration camps. Alois Denemarek escaped his fate - shortly before that he got married and moved with his wife to another village. They confiscated his farm after the war and the arrival of Communism. He was arrested and worked in the glassworks. He worked in the PTP (Auxiliary Technical Troops) for 18 months. Then he worked in the vineyard in Znojmo.

The father of Jan Kubiš, his stepmother, and other family members were dragged off from this house on June 18, 1942. Afterwards, the house had not been maintained anymore and for the last forty years it has become a ruin. The village of Dolní Vilémovice decided to buy the building and renovate it. The plan is to convert the house into a museum dedicated to Jan Kubiš. For this purpose, the municipality launched a fundraising campaign.
