You Are Young, Tear It with Your Teeth
Jarmila Bočánková was seventeen when she was sentenced to four years for high treason and espionage. She spent several months in prison in Hradec Králové. The hygienic conditions were pitiful and very uncomfortable for the girls, especially during menstruation. When Mrs Bočánková asked the female warden if she can give her sanitary towels or a piece of cotton wool, the warden threw an old and rough coat into her cell. When Mrs Bočánková asked what she should do with it, the warden answered: “‛Tear it up into pieces, you need it for your thing.’ I told her I do not have scissors, so how I should do that. ‛But you have teeth, you are young, tear it with your teeth.’” The girls managed to rip the coat up, but because they had to walk to work across the whole town, these improvised towels definitely did not serve their purpose. “The blood leaked on our legs and into the socks, it was bad.” After the transfer from Hradec Králové, Jarmila Bočánková served her sentence in Kostelec nad Orlicí and then in Lnáře u Blatné. She is still not aware of any real reason why she or her family should be condemned. She has already forgotten the injustice that happened to her and she tries to live in the present. But there is one thing she will never forgive: “I am willing to forgive everything, but I will never forgive the communists that when I was young I did not have a chance to hear ‛I love you’ from a boy.
