Failed Attempt at Escape

Milan Sehnal, who was sentenced to many years in prison, served part of his sentence in communist prison camp Mariánská in the Jáchymov area. In the beginning of 1951, Mr. Sehnal, along with two comrades, attempted to flee from the prison but were caught. “They put us between wires, the space was three or four meters wide; and there was a guard on a watch tower, pointing his gun at us. He got an order to shoot us dead if we moved. We stood there all night long,” he recalled. In the morning, the three men were escorted to dungeons of Capuchin monastery, which was located within the premises of the prison camp. Milan Sehnal recalls that out of the many prisons he had gone through, this one was the worst.:“They tied me to iron bars and left me there for 48 hours. After a while, you start to be confused. It was cold, they gave me no food or water; I wetted myself. I had to stay there like that. Moreover, I was blindfolded the whole time. Guards with dogs came there every once in a while and the dogs attacked me. It was terribly stressful. When they finally took me out, I wasn’t able to walk. I had to crawl on all fours.”

Milan Sehnal

Milan Sehnal was born in 1930 in Olomouc. After the Communist coup of 1948, he chose to fight the totalitarian regime. In 1949, he fled to Germany where he joined the U.S. intelligence services (CIC). Before he was arrested by the Czechoslovak Communist security forces, he managed to illegally cross the border on several occasions. The court in Brno sentenced him to 12 years in prison. His term in prison was increased several times for an attempted escape, sabotage, and further offences against the Communist regime. Among other things, he participated in an uprising of the inmates of the Vojna camp which resulted in an increase of his prison term by 13 years. He served his term in prisons in Brno, (Cejl), Bory, Ruzyně, Leopoldov, and in the uranium mines in Slavkovsko, Jáchymovsko, and Příbramsko. He was released in the course of an amnesty in 1960. In 1968, he became the spokesperson of the Association of Former Political Prisoners (K 231) of the district committee in Olomouc. After the invasion of the armies of the Warsaw Treaty, he was interrogated by the secret political police, (StB), many times. Today, he lives with his wife in Olomouc, where he is the chairman of a local branch of the Confederation of Political Prisoners.

Dřívější poutní místo Mariasorg. Tábor začal fungovat 4. června 1949 a původně byl určen pro vězně mladší 25 let. Součástí tábora byly vyšetřovny umístěné v podzemí bývalého kapucínského kláštera. Klášter podlehl demolici, poutní kostel sloužil jako cvičná střelnice, později jako garáže. Vězni z Mariánské pracovali na šachtě Eva, kam se dopravovali tzv. muklovským autobusem – až 150 mužů pochodovalo v pětistupech, omotáno ocelovým lanem.
