Jan Kubiš

Jan Kubiš

Born in Dolní Vilémovice on 24 June 1913 to the family of shoemaker František as the second of four children, he lost his mother at age six. His father married a widow who had four of her own children, and together they had four more. As a result, he grew up in a family with eleven siblings. Having completed the primary school, he worked as a farm worker. He joined the army at twenty two. Four months after the occupation, he left for Poland and then Algeria where he joined the Foreign Legion. Evacuated to England after the demise of France, he received training for special tasks. His friend Gabčík interceded for him to be included in the Anthropoid team instead of paratrooper Karel Svoboda, injured during the training. The team of two had the orders to attack the Reich’s third highest-positioned man, Reinhard Heydrich. The team fulfilled its orders. Kubiš died on 18 June 1942; he bled to death in an ambulance following the battle in the church in Resslova Street.

Pravoslavný chrám svatých Cyrila a Metoděje se v roce 1942 stal úkrytem a poté dějištěm posledního odporu sedmi československých parašutistů z Anglie. Mezi nimi byli i vojáci, kteří zorganizovali a provedli atentát na zastupujícího říšského protektora Reinharda Heydricha. Proti parašutistům bojovalo téměř 800 příslušníků bezpečnostních složek protektorátu. Bitva trvala šest hodin.
