The Children from Lidice in the Infant Care Insitute

Available in: English | Česky

Seven children from Lidice, who were younger than one year at the time of the Lidice annihilation, survived the war in the German infant care institute in Masaryk Houses (at present Thomayerova Hospital). They were taken care of by German nurses, but their relatives could sometimes secretly visit them. They controlled their condition, brought them food and took pictures of them. During the Prague Uprising in 1945, the children were immediately taken home by their relatives. One of these seven children was Veronika Hanfová, married Rýmonová. She has no memories of those times; she knows it only by hearsay. Before her mother returned from the concentration camp, little Veronika was taken care of by her aunt Ms. Volfová. “My aunt kept telling me that my mother would come back. But I had no idea what does the word mother really mean,” recalls Veronika Rýmonová one of her oldest memories. “I just remember that it was dark, someone was holding my hands and they kept telling me: ‘This is your mummy.’ But I did not feel anything. She was a stranger to me.” Throughout the entire time in the concentration camp, the mother was kept alive by the hope that her daughter was still alive. Therefore, this meeting hurt her profoundly.

Veronika Rýmonová (née Hanfová) was born on January 22, 1942 in Kladno. Her parents lived in Lidice until its annihilation by the Nazis. As a four months old nursling, she was taken first to the orphanage in the building of the former technical school in Karlovo square in Prague, then to the hospital Zemská, also on Karlovo square, and in the end she was placed in the infant care home in Prague-Krč. During the Prague Uprising, she was returned to her relatives. Her father was killed together with the other men from Lidice; her mother survived the war in the Ravensbrück concentration camp. After the war, she first lived together with her mother by their relatives, later they moved to Kladno, and in 1952, they returned to a new house in the rebuild village of new Lidice. After finishing the elementary school, Veronika applied to study at a secondary school for filmmakers. But instead of studying she decided to take a job at the Barrandov film studios right away. After her marriage and the birth of her children, she started to work in Pragostav, a company where her husband was also employed, and she remained there until her retirement. She is a member of the Czech Union of Freedom Fighters.

The complex of buildings built in the years 1926-1929 originally served the elderly and those who were incurably ill, including children. During the war it served as an infant-care institute for the orphans left behind Czech families that had been executed. Some very small children from Lidice were placed in this institute for instance. The institute changed to the Thomayerova nemocnice hospital after the war.
